On more than one occasion, I’ve captured the absolute final photograph of someone. It’s bittersweet. On one hand, I am glad to have created this image—stopped time, on the other, it’s just sad that they’re no longer among us.
Family History
I try to keep this type of family history out of my blog… especially while it’s so recent and raw, but I’m pretty sure this is the final photograph of my Aunt Marie. Edna Marie Blalock was her full name. She was named after my grandmother, and I was named after her. Tammy Marie Blalock. This picture was from about six weeks ago when a bunch of Blalocks gathered to commemorate the religious hymns of my great-grandmother.
Ironically, I read something very profound just before she passed. And as usual, I can’t remember where, so I’ll just have to paraphrase as best I can. The piece went on to say that most people think that life is all about the highs, the successes and the peaks. But the writer disagreed. They believed that life is about the lows… the valleys, and in this case, death. The peaks are only afforded to us in order for us to survive the valleys. (I sure wish I could remember where I read that because they explained it a lot more beautifully than I can.)
