This hill country wedding at Western Sky in Bulverde was a great wedding! And I’m just not saying that because the groom’s cake had the most realistic safari on it! I rarely pass up an opportunity to help another wedding photographer out by second shooting under their direction. These experiences always prove to be enjoyable in some regard. Plus, they are always… always an opportunity to grow and learn.
I second shot a total of eight weddings this year with Sara Griffin Photography, and it’s time I get to blogging about the beautiful venues, opportunities, and couples that Sara introduced me to.
This wedding kicked off 2018 and happened the very first Saturday of the year. The couple was John and Kacy and John was from Africa—hence the safari cake.
As second photographer, my usual primary duties are to hang out with the groom and his men prior to the ceremony and document their pre-ceremony antics.
Hill Country Wedding at Western Sky
Sometimes the “antics” get a little crazy, but not in this case. All the men were happy to just slowly sip on a little tequila prior to the big moment.
Well, except for this one shot!
Which may or may not have led to this shot!
But I digress. One of my favorite moments from this day was watching John and his father share a celebratory stogy just prior to the ceremony beginning.
Western Sky is a gorgeous venue to shoot at! I loved the “Tejas” river running through the outdoor ceremony area—which includes 200 white chairs—and the water fall feature. The White Chapel, shown in the background, sits on the edge of a gorgeous treeline. There is a wooden bridge to cross the river to get to the ceremony area. (How beautiful is this reflection in the river?)
The ballroom is huge enough to seat over 300 guests and still have plenty of room for a dance floor. The ballroom features beautiful stained concrete floors, vintage chandeliers and light fixtures, high ceilings with permanent draping, and a large built-in bar. There is also a bridal suite and groom’s lounge (with shuffleboard table), a prep kitchen, and huge front and back porches for your guests to lounge during your reception. These porches reminded me a lot of the comfy porches at Cracker Barrel.
I do regret not being able to remember who the caterer was for this hill country wedding. John and Kacy had family-style dining and the food was probably the best I’ve ever eaten at a wedding. Seriously.
Here are a few more of my favorite images from the day:

About Ata-Girl
I am a San Antonio-based wedding photographer and I cater to outdoor-loving couples who prefer to have all the realness captured on their wedding days. I am the wedding photographer for the outdoor adventurers, the romantics, the laid back, the snugglers, and those who wish to capture all their realness.
I am absolutely in love with capturing the kinds of weddings where there are more hugs than handshakes, the dance floor rumbles all night long, and chairs are pretty much rendered useless after dinner. Whiskey bottles are passed around, most of the wedding party has been best-best friends since kindergarten, Grams is likely to lose her shoes and your partner is much more emotional than you are. These kinds of weddings are my jam!
You can always call or text, but if you really want to get to know me, schedule a meetup!
