As I’ve stated before, any time I am invited to second shoot a wedding and my own calendar will allow it, I jump on the chance to help another photographer out. Such was the case with this San Antonio backyard wedding helping out my professional colleague, Ashley Zufelt with A to Z Photography.

San Antonio Backyard Wedding

This was Laurie’s and James’ beautiful backyard wedding. The bride was escorted down a stairway flanked by oak trees and tiki torches to the romantic sounds of a three-piece string band. The altar was sandwiched between a beautiful 20-foot waterfall cascading down in the backyard pool and a cliff overlooking the hills of northern San Antonio. Laurie and James’ backyard wedding was intimate, quaint, and picturesque.

The morning started with Laurie getting dressed at the residence. She casually readied for the day and seemed to be totally at ease. I couldn’t detect an ounce of nervousness… except for the tiny moment when she couldn’t find her lipstick.

The ceremony was short, sweet and lovely. The two were surrounded by their families and closest of friends who witnessed the official beginning of their lives together. Laurie and James are the sweetest couple! I’m sure their lives will be filled with friends, happiness and many, many magical moments! Oh… and a few trips around the world since James is a airplane pilot.

The ceremony included the Jewish tradition of the breaking of the glass. Laurie’s high heels prevented her from getting a good aim on the glass, but after a few good stomps, the glass was shattered. In jest, some people say this is the last time the groom will get to put his foot down. Laurie’s mom explained that the tradition signifies the sadness of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, but also blesses the couple with the spiritual and destiny of the Jewish people. After the breaking of the glass, those in attendance shouted, “Mazel Tov.”

When the ceremony was over, Ashley and I took the bride and groom on a 30-minute private portrait session away from the guests. This allowed them a few secret minutes to share with each other after exchanging their vows and before rejoining their guests to celebrate their union. James and Laurie allowed us one more brief photo session after dark to capture some more creative shots. Their generosity of time and willingness to try something different is a photographer’s dream! Thank you!!

Here are some more of my favorite images from the day.
